How to make your blessings stick in 2018

Do you remember this song?

There’s a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza,
There’s a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, a hole.

Well, fix it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
Well, fix it, dear Henry, dear Henry, fix it.

With what shall I fix it, dear Liza, dear Liza?
With what shall I fix it, dear Liza, with what?

With a straw, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
With a straw, dear Henry, dear Henry, with a straw.

But the straw is too long, dear Liza, dear Liza,
The straw is too long, dear Liza, too long.

Cut it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
Well, cut it, dear Henry, dear Henry, cut it.

With what shall I cut it, dear Liza, dear Liza?
With what shall I cut it, dear Liza, with what?

With an axe, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
With an axe, dear Henry, dear Henry, an axe.

The axe is too dull, dear Liza, dear Liza,
The axe is too dull, dear Liza, too dull.

Sharpen it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
Well, sharpen it, dear Henry, dear Henry, hone it.

On what shall I sharpen it, dear Liza, dear Liza?
On what shall I hone it, dear Liza, with what?

On a stone, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
On a stone, dear Henry, dear Henry, on a stone.

But the stone is too dry, dear Liza, dear Liza,
The stone is too dry, dear Liza, too dry.

Well, wet it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
Well, wet it, dear Henry, dear Henry, wet it.

With what shall I wet it, dear Liza, dear Liza?
With what shall I wet it, dear Liza, with what?

Try water, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
Try water, dear Henry, dear Henry, use water.

In what shall I fetch it, dear Liza, dear Liza?
In what shall I fetch it, dear Liza, in what?

In a bucket, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
In a bucket, dear Henry, dear Henry, in a bucket.

There’s a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza,
There’s a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, a hole.

Like you, last year I bursted through the year with great intentions! It was my Oh Hell No Year last year and that motto helped me let go of so many hindrances in my life which included toxic mindsets that were holding me back, toxic relationships that kept me frazzled and I even had to ‘Oh Hell No’ myself a few times to help me get out of my own way!

This year, I have seen hardship with my Father-in law’s sudden blindness, my mother’s major heart attack and my mother-in law’s serious head injury and my son’s bad concussion. But when I swing to the other perspective I see that my oldest daughter graduated from high school, my book Fearless in 21-Days hit the publishing world, I took a  fabulous Mexico vacation with great friends, my son won MVP in football and I paid off one of my student loans! (one more to go!)

This year has been a year of my bucket filling and draining, filling and draining.

I sat down to pray the other morning and asked God what His word for me was this coming year and I heard in my heart the song “There’s a hole in my bucket, Dear Liza” I knew right away what my focus needed to be.

Available now for pre-sale, this book is both practical and faith filled and will start you on a powerful journey out of anxiety. In this book I share my personal and vulnerable story of overcoming severe anxiety, panic, OCD and depression, along with practical and spiritual advice to help you overcome anxiety.

I knew right away that God’s blessings this year will be in abundance, overflowing even, but if I don’t fill in the cracks in my life these blessings could drain. You see, God never stops pouring out favour and blessing, we just do a lousy job containing them.

  1. We don’t recognize it as a blessing.
  2. We aren’t thankful for what we have.
  3. We have a mindset of self-pity.
  4. We let fear and anxiety of the future distract us from the blessing of the present.
  5. We have idols in our life that keep us from living in wholeness.
  6. We expect others to fill our buckets when they have holes in theirs too.
  7. We go through life with a emotional, financial and spiritual poverty mindset – holding out our hole filled buckets wanting more and more.
  8. We seek everywhere else but God to patch up our buckets.
  9. We go through the Henry/Liza song over and over again with issues in our life.
  10. We blame God for the holes when His blessings drain quickly through.

I want God’s blessings this year to stick, don’t you? I want to see the things God has for me become fruitful and multiply not wither away because I was too filled with holes to contain it and steward this. To me, personally this means…

  1. Mending broken relationships with honesty and effort.
  2. Asking Jesus for help with self-control when it comes to my health and finances.
  3. Learning to put a priority on joy in my life by living in the now and making ‘celebration’ an important way of living.
  4. Being kind to myself for my holes and asking God to fill the empty spaces.
  5. This means going into the New Year with great excitement and expectation for what is to come.
