Arise, Shine! Devotional

When I was a teen, my dad had the most irritating way of waking me up on a Saturday morning. He would either start blasting The Best of Rick Springfield open my door and in the deepest baritone yell “wake up!”, or use the dreaded vacuum! I know for a darn fact that my dad never vacuumed, but he knew how to turn it on and use it to wake me up in the mornings.

I still haven’t grown out of being a Saturday morning princess, and my husband now gets the Saturday morning job of trying to wake me. He uses a much gentler approach, by bringing me coffee or throwing a few kids on me.

Sometimes in our spiritual journey we can fall asleep. We lose passion for our calling, we have no desire to pray or read our bible. We feel spiritually numb, and dry, and the worst part is we don’t want to wake up! However, our Father knows how to wake us from spiritual sleep. All throughout the bible God says “Wakey, wakey..”

1 Kings 19:5 He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, there was an angel touching him, and he said to him, “Arise, eat.”

We all know that a crisis is a great motivator for waking us up spiritually. However, God wants us to wake up so we can be blessed, and filled! He wants us nourished and whole.

Many of us have fallen into such a deep spiritual sleep that we are missing out on the abundance that God has for us, and we are spiritually starving.

ARISE, EAT!

Isaiah 60:1 “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.

We can sit stagnate in a spiritual slumber, and wonder what our purpose in life is. We get weary or discouraged. Spiritual sleep can create such a disillusionment that we begin to believe we have no worth.  God’s heart is for you to awaken so that you can be a light to others and fulfill your purpose!

ARISE, SHINE!

Judges 5:12 Wake up, wake up, Deborah! Wake up, wake up, break out in song!

After strong battles in our lives God gives us rest, but sometimes we can stay in that place of rest past what God has called us to. God wants us to arise, fight and then sing songs of victory for what he has done for us!

ARISE, SING!

Psalm 57:8 – Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn.

I will never forget laying in bed, feeling the darkest despair wash over and keeping me almost in a trance. I opened my bible to David telling his soul to wake up! Fight, Grab Hold, Worship, Praise God!

God wants us to Wake up so we can praise him and be set free!

ARISE, PRAISE!

Let today be the day you recognize that you have been asleep for far too long. Ask God to wake you from your spiritual slumber, get back into the word, and sing praises to Him. The best way to break from a slumber is to get into the habit of gratitude, thanking God for the blessings in your life revives a cold spirit. Being around other Christians, listening to sermons online, listening and praising to worship music, can all help awaken your spirit again. Getting into the word, even if it’s tedious at first, being generous and using your gifts.. all these things can lead you out of sleep and into spiritual awakening!
