Miracle Monday -Reclaiming our faith for the miraculous

What if.

What if, once a week, every family sat together around their dinner table, and after the “how was your day?” And the “pass the ketchup” they prayed for those who needed a miracle?

Last night as I was tucking in my nauseated 8-year-old daughter, she started moaning about not feeling well. I gave her a bucket, tucked her in and told her what I do when I feel sick. I told her that I pray for those sicker than me.  We started to pray together for my dear friend who has cancer, and we said amen, soon realizing we had forgotten to pray for her (my nauseous daughter) we chuckled and then my daughter said something so simple… “Mom, you know how we have meatless Mondays? (my weekly attempt to use up the expired dried beans in my pantry)

“Yes” I responded,

“We should have Miracle Mondays too” she said –  and that was it, I was on Facebook, declaring that from now on, its Miracle Monday at the Ball family house.

So often we limit God to prayers that could potentially be answered through modern medicine, good advice or therapy. It is easy to pray for these situations because if God doesn’t step in science will, there’s a fallback. But in life we will encounter the impossible. The incurable diagnosis, the broken down marriage, the financial crisis, or another hopeless situation that no human hand can heal.

But I want my kids to know, believe and become first hand witnesses to the miracles of God, or what’s the point of passing on my faith?!

David declared “You are God who performs miracles; you display your power among the people. Psalm 77:14

Jesus displayed his deity through his miracles. He didn’t proclaim he was God by marching down the street, he didn’t get into scripture battles with priests to prove his holiness, he came, and he demonstrated power.

Now when John in prison heard about the activities of Christ, he sent a message by his disciples

And asked Him, Are You the One Who was to come, or should we keep on expecting a different one?

And Jesus replied to them, Go and report to John what you hear and see:

The blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed (by healing) and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up and the poor have good news (the Gospel) preached to them.

Matthew 11 2-5

Praying for miracles requires a small amount of faith according to Jesus He replied,  Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”  Matthew 17:20

I have to be honest, I,  through life, and failures, and loses have diminished my faith for miracles. I have given up praying for the impossible, and began merely praying that the impossible would be handled with grace. I have to admit that I get nervous to ask my kids to pray for one another in boldness when they are sick or injured because I don’t want them to get excited for nothing. I know! This sounds horrible! But I have held too many dying hands in my life, hands that I, and we, and the church cried out for, and I am battle weary.

On the other hand, I have been witness to much answered prayer that could only be explained by a supernatural intervention. These stories do exist in my life, but I have forgotten. I have grown weary, and spend more time praying for faith to pray into a situation, than for that situation!

However, when my daughter, with her childlike faith, declared Monday as Miracle Monday, something shifted in my thinking and shook loose in my spirit. I felt a resounding commission to start praying for miracles!

I am asking you to do the same, to start seeking God for the impossible, to pray again for the prayers we gave up on a long time ago. To boldly ask God to come down off his throne and act! To declare captives free, to declare boldly bodies to be healed, and for salvation to come to those who are perishing.

Will you and your family join me every Monday, meatless or not, and begin to pray? Join my Facebook page so we can keep each other updated on any miracles!

We’ll be adding names and impossibilities to our chalkboard and waiting in expectancy to erase them one by one!
